What is a Product Designer?

A product designer takes care of translating the requirements of consumers into product design features. Additionally, they design a wide range of consumer products and research the market to get new product design ideas. 

Product designers work closely with the industrial team to design and add enhancements to basic consumer products such as chairs, tables, or beds. But product designers are not limited to consumer products only, some designers focus on complex products including medical and electrical equipment.

They also create and outline product specifications for stakeholders as well as members of the design team for review. They also generate unique designs and deliver feedback on methods to add more convenience to the product and make it more visually appealing to customers by working closely with the design team.

  • Work with cross-functional teams to gather design requirements and user insights.
  • Design wireframes, prototypes, and UI designs that align with project goals.
  • Perform usability testing and collect user feedback to iterate on designs.
  • See if the new product suits best as per the market needs and customer preferences.
  • Ensure a consistent and visually appealing user experience (UX) across all product features.
  • Set design specifications based on briefs from internal teams and external partners.
  • Prepare drafts on paper or on CAD (digitally).
  • Utilize 3D modeling platforms to design products and components.
  • Develop prototypes and test usability. 
  • Stay updated on industry trends and best practices in design.
  • Help in developing design guidelines and maintaining design systems.
  • Contribute to user research activities to improve product understanding.
  • Participate in design critiques and provide constructive feedback.


  • BSc/MSc degree in Product Design, Manufacturing Design Engineering, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in product design or user interface design.
  • Experience in design software and tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Sketch, Figma, or similar.
  • Familiarity with 3D modeling software.
  • Practical experience with computer-aided design (CAD) technologies.
  • Strong visual and interaction design skills.
  • Proficiency in creating wireframes and prototypes.
  • Knowledge of user-centered design principles.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Adaptability and a willingness to learn and stay updated on design trends.
